What an air ambulance is
An air ambulance is a fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter fitted for patient transfer, with a stretcher, oxygen and monitoring equipment, flown by a commercial operator with a medical team on board. Most inter-city transfers in India use small jets or turboprops between airports, with road ambulances at both ends.
What decides how fast it can happen
- Where the nearest suitable aircraft and medical team are based.
- Whether the departure and arrival airports are open at the time, especially at night.
- The patient’s condition and the doctor’s fitness-to-fly assessment.
- Paperwork from the sending and receiving hospitals.
- Weather on the route.
What affects the cost
Like any charter, an air ambulance is priced for the whole aircraft. Flying time, positioning of the aircraft, the size of the medical team and the equipment needed (for example a ventilator) all affect the price. Ground ambulances at either end may or may not be included, so ask.
Government heli-ambulance services
Public helicopter emergency services are growing. On 29 October 2024 the Prime Minister launched a heli-ambulance service at AIIMS Rishikesh under the Sanjeevani scheme, with costs shared between the Centre and Uttarakhand and the service offered free to patients across the state’s 13 districts (ETV Bharat). These services serve specific regions and cases, so a private air ambulance is still the usual route for most inter-city transfers.
Questions to ask before you confirm
- Who operates the aircraft? Check the company in DGCA’s list of permit holders.
- Who is on the medical team, and what equipment will be on board?
- Is bed-to-bed transfer, including road ambulances, part of the price?
- What is the earliest realistic departure time, and what could delay it?
- Can one family member travel with the patient?
BookAir’s air ambulance service arranges transfers with DGCA-permitted operators and asks only for what it needs to start: the cities, the hospitals and the patient’s needs.
Common questions
Is an air ambulance a helicopter or a plane?
Either. Inter-city transfers in India usually use small jets or turboprops between airports. Helicopters are used for shorter distances or places without an airport.
Is there a free government air ambulance?
Some states run heli-ambulance services. Uttarakhand’s service from AIIMS Rishikesh, launched in October 2024 under the Sanjeevani scheme, is free for patients in the state. Coverage elsewhere varies.
What documents are usually needed?
Typically the patient’s ID, a fitness-to-fly note or medical summary from the treating doctor, and confirmation from the receiving hospital. Your provider will confirm the exact list.
