Business jet types you can charter in India, from light to heavy

The right jet depends on how many people fly, how far, and from which runway. Here is what India’s charter fleet actually offers, by size.

Ask for “a private jet” and an operator will ask you three questions: how many passengers, how far, and how much luggage. Those answers decide the size of aircraft, and size drives most of the price. Here is what is actually available in India, counted from DGCA’s list of non-scheduled operators.

Light jets

Light jets suit short and medium sectors with a few passengers. In India’s charter fleet these include the Cessna Citation family (21 aircraft, from CJ1+ and CJ2+ to Citation XL models), the Beechcraft Premier (9), Learjet 40, 45 and 60 (8), the Pilatus PC-24 (5) and the Embraer Phenom (2). Expect cabins with limited headroom and luggage space. Many of these aircraft also work from shorter runways.

Midsize and super-midsize

For longer domestic sectors and more comfort, the fleet offers the Hawker family (19, from the 400XP to the 800, 850, 900 series and a Hawker 4000), the Dassault Falcon 2000 family (18), the Bombardier Challenger 604/605/650 and 3500 (13), and Gulfstream G150 and G200 (8). These usually have stand-up or near stand-up cabins and space for more bags.

Large and long-range

The large cabins are the Embraer Legacy 600/650 (21), the Bombardier Global family (17, from Global Express to Global 7500), Falcon 7X, 6X and 900EX (4), the Embraer Lineage 1000 and other Embraer airliner-based jets, a Gulfstream G550, and an Airbus A319 corporate jet. They fit bigger groups and can fly long international sectors.

Seats in the fleet

The seat counts DGCA lists for charter fixed-wing aircraft cluster between 6 and 13, with 8 and 9 seats the most common. Real capacity depends on cabin layout and on luggage, fuel and runway on the day, so always confirm with the operator.

Turboprop or jet?

For short hops, a turboprop such as the King Air (43 in the fleet) can be cheaper and can reach smaller airfields. BookAir compares the options in jet, turboprop or helicopter and explains baggage limits by aircraft.

Choosing the right size

  • Count passengers and bags honestly. Golf bags and large suitcases change the aircraft.
  • Check the runway at both ends. Some jets cannot use short or high-altitude strips.
  • For long sectors, ask whether a fuel stop is needed. BookAir explains why some routes need one.
  • Ask where the aircraft is based. Positioning flights add cost.
