Every used aircraft has a story. The logbooks tell part of it and the airframe tells the rest. A pre-purchase inspection, often called a PPI, is how a buyer reads both before money changes hands.
Records first
A good inspection starts at a desk. Engineers check that logbooks are continuous, that airworthiness directives and service bulletins are complied with, that component times add up, and that any repair was approved and recorded. Missing records often cost more than any physical defect, because they can make an aircraft hard to insure, finance or resell.
Then the aircraft
The physical part looks for corrosion, damage, wear and anything that does not match the records. Depending on the type and your budget it may include engine borescope inspections, oil analysis, avionics checks and a test flight. Agree the scope in writing before work starts, including who pays to put the aircraft back together.
Who should inspect
- Engineers independent of the seller and of the seller’s regular maintenance provider.
- An organisation experienced with that exact type and engine.
- For work in India, an organisation approved by DGCA under CAR 145. Our directory of CAR 145 organisations lists them by city and state.
Turning findings into a decision
Most inspections find something. Sort findings into airworthiness items the seller must fix, items that affect price, and items you can live with. Use the report to agree repairs or a price adjustment before you sign. Your lawyer should tie the final payment to the agreed findings being closed.
Questions to ask before you book a PPI
- Will the seller release the full records before the inspection?
- Where will the aircraft be inspected, and who moves it there?
- What exactly is in scope, and what costs extra?
- How long will the aircraft be out of service?
- Who owns the report, and can it be shared with your financier or insurer?

Common questions
What is a pre-purchase inspection?
An independent review of an aircraft’s records and physical condition before purchase, used to confirm airworthiness and agree price or repairs.
Who can carry out maintenance work on an aircraft in India?
Organisations approved by DGCA under CAR 145. AIR BITOLA’s directory lists them with their DGCA region and approval validity.
Should the seller’s maintenance provider do the inspection?
It is better to use engineers independent of the seller, with experience on that exact type.
